Mojo🔥 Is Now Open Source
The Mojo programming language has been committed to an open-source release since May 2023. Last week, they released version 1.0, and today they fulfilled that original promise by open-sourcing the compiler and toolchain under the Apache 2.0 license.
When Mojo was first released, the goal was to build a superset of Python, allowing the existing Python codebase to jump-start its own ecosystem. That plan changed around August 2025:
Mojo may or may not evolve into a complete superset of Python—and that’s okay even if it doesn’t.
Today, AI-assisted programming tools are already doing a good job of helping migrate Python to Mojo, which is deeply encouraging. We believe that better tools and a more mature ecosystem will make this evolution even smoother in the future.
Today, Mojo is an independent language. It uses Python-inspired syntax and is designed to make GPU programming as simple as possible, but it does not guarantee 100% compatibility with existing code.
